I was told last night that Merlin wasn't doing so well. He's 40 year old mini with the warmest of hearts and the most gentle soul. He was running a very high temperature and wasn't looking like he may make it through the night.
I went down to lay hands on him. As I arrived I found that he was surrounded by his 2 legged family worrying about this horse and his prognosis. The vet was out on 2 other emergencies as they were waiting for some sign in one direction or another. He wasn't very that I was attempting to do the reiki on him in his stall so, tied to the cross ties he stood with a tears staining his face, allowing me to offer his the reiki energy. Reassuring him he was loved, whispering in his ears,"good boy" I felt him relax into the energy and let go a bit. It's quite rewarding when an animal relaxes into you allowing the work in. When he was done, he twisted wanting to return to his stall. Once returned to his "room" as I like to refer to it as, he ate some and his fever dropped a little. This little guy is quite ill so the reality of him not living much longer is the truth, as painful as that is. His 2 legged family, as with any family, want to get another day and they got that. However, making the decision when enough is enough is one that is truly devastating when you love the animal or person. I have found that the deepest love comes forth when you are facing death directly in it's face and you embrace it, accept it for what it is and allow the feelings to emerge. It's not something you can prepare for, it's brought on as it happens and allowing the natural flow of emotions to rise and come forth guides you in facing it, accepting it, and knowing this transition,is the next step. Release with love, showing that trusting all is as it should be. They are still there, just in another form.
